Narendra Modi sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of India

Narendra Modi sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of India at the head of a 45-member coalition govt after the elections threw the first govt with absolute majority in 30 years. 63-year-old Modi, the first leader to get a landslide majority for BJP on its own, became the 15th prime minister in a virtual 'coronation' ceremony in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan before a 3000-strong gathering, the largest audience at the swearing in a of new government.
Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Uma Bharti, Maneka Gandhi, Ananth Kumar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Smriti Irani and Harsh Vardhan were among those who were sworn in as Cabinet ministers. Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Akali Dal), Anant Geete (Shiv Sena) and Ashok Gajapathi Raju (TDP) were those from allied parties who took the oath on Monday. Dignitaries from politics, industry, cinema and religion, capped by leaders of SAARC nations including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, watched Modi take the oath of office and secrecy in Hindi. Vice President Hamid Ansari, outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his ministerial colleagues P Chidambaram, Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel and Pallam Raju, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, senior BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, outgoing Speaker Meira Kumar, former Presidents Abdul Kalam, Pratibha Patil were among those who attended the ceremony.

Rajiv Mathur is New Chief Information Commissioner (CIC)

Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Rajiv Mathur was sworn-in today as the new chief information commissioner (CIC) in the Central Information Commission. The oath was administered to Mr Mathur by President Pranab Mukherjee, said a statement. 64-year-old Mr. Mathur succeeds Sushma Singh, who demitted office on Wednesday, as the sixth chief of the transparency watchdog.
His name was recommended by a three-member selection panel headed by outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. "My priority would be to reduce pendency of appeals and complaints, and to strengthen RTI apparatus. One of the priorities of the Commission would be to ensure adherence of Section 4 of RTI Act (which mandates public authorities to disclose information related to their working in public domain) by various government departments," Mathur told PTI. There are about 14,000 appeals and complaints pending with the CIC, he said. He will have a tenure till August 23, when he attains 65 years of age. According to rules, CIC is appointed either for a maximum of five-year term or till 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.

First Woman CM of Gujarat is Anandiben Patel

Anandiben Patel is the new Chief Minister of Gujarat and the first woman to hold the post in the state. Anandiben, a close associate of her predecessor, the PM-elect, Narendra Modi, had his firm backing even though there were reservations in some quarters over her candidature.
73-year-old Patel's name was proposed and adopted unanimously at a meeting of the Legislature Party in the presence of Modi, who had momemnts earlier had resigned as the chief minister. Modi's close aide Amit Shah and BJP General Secretary Thavar Chand Ghelot were also present. Modi, the longest-serving chief minister of the state, who led BJP to a spectacular victory in the Lok Sabha elections, will take over as prime minister on Monday. She will be the first woman chief minister of Gujarat.

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is the apex body constituted in the Ministry of Environment and Forests under 'Rules for Manufacture, Use, Import, Export and Storage of Hazardous Microorganisms/Genetically Engineered Organisms or Cells 1989', under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.  The Rules of 1989 also define five competent authorities i.e. the Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBSC), Review Committee of Genetic Manipulation (RCGM), Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), State Biotechnology Coordination Committee (SBCC) and District Level Committee (DLC) for handling of various aspects of the rules
