Government announces Merger of PSU Banks

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a big consolidation of public sector banks. Under the scheme of amalgamation, 10 public sector banks are to be merged into four banks. After the amalgamation, the total number of Public Sector Banks in the country will come down to 12 from 27 banks in 2017
The amalgamation of banks will be in the following manner:

  • Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India to be merged into one single bank, with business of Rs 7.95 trillion to make India’s 2nd largest bank.
  • Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank are to be merged to become the 4th largest public sector bank with business of Rs 15.2 lakh crore.
  • Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank are to be merged to become the 5th largest public sector bank with business of Rs 14.6 lakh crore.
  • Indian Bank will be merged with Allahabad Bank to become the 7th largest public sector bank with business of Rs 8.08 lakh crore.

The government has also announced capital infusion of over Rs 55,000 crore into public sector banks: PNB (Rs 16,000 crore), Union Bank of India (Rs 11,700 crore), Bank of Baroda (Rs 7000 crore), Indian Bank (Rs 2500 crore), Indian Overseas Bank (Rs 3800 crore), Central Bank (Rs 3300 crore), UCO Bank (Rs 2100 crore), United Bank (Rs 1600 crore) and Punjab and Sind Bank (Rs 750 crore).

PM Modi launches Fit India Movement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched nation-wide Fit India Movement from event held in Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex in New Delhi. It was launched on the occasion of National Sports Day (observed on 29 August) observed to commemorate birth anniversary of hockey doyen Major Dhyan Chand.
About Fit India Movement
It is aimed at encouraging people to give priority to sports and fitness in their day-to-day lives. It will inculcate physical activities/sports into the daily lives of citizens to improve their physical fitness and well-being.
Advisory committee
Union Sports Ministry has constituted Advisory committee to advise the government on the “Fit India Movement. It is headed by Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. Its members comprises of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), national sports federations (NSFs), government officials, private bodies and celebrated fitness enthusiasts. Representatives of private bodies such as Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Tata Trusts, JSW Cement and JSW Paints, Reliance Foundation, SE TransStadia Pvt. Ltd., ASSOCHAM India, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), and actors Milind Soman and Shilpa Shetty will also be involved in it.

J&K Reorganisation Bill 2019 passed in Rajya Sabha

Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 passed in the Rajya Sabha today. It also moved a resolution revoking Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the bill as well as moved the resolution in the House. Opposition members belonging from Congress, Left, TMC, SP, PDP, RJD and others created uproar in the House after the Minister’s announcement. The agitating members are sitting in the well and raising slogans.  Rajya Sabha adopts Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, 125 vote for 61 vote against and 1 member abstains. The Bill is passed by the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad demanded discussion on the prevailing situation in the state. Mr Azad said curfew has been imposed and prominent leaders put under house arrest. Home Minister Amit Shah said, government is ready to discuss every issue related to Jammu and Kashmir. Lok Sabha will discuss the resolutions regarding Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution to scrap provisions of Article 370 and Bills to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir to make Ladakh a Union Territory and make a residual State a Union Territory with Legislative Assembly.

Satwiksairaj, Chirag 1st Indian doubles pair to win Super 500 title

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty today became the first Indian pair to win a BWF Super 500 badminton tournament. They beat World champions Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen of China in the summit clash of Thailand Open 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 in Bangkok to win the men’s doubles category. 
The third-seeded Chinese pair settled for the second position after battling hard for an hour and two minutes as the Commonwealth Games silver medallists Rankireddy-Shetty claimed their maiden title.  Sports fraternity celebrated ‘great win for the Indian doubles’. Twitter exploded with wishes for Satwik and Chirag for putting India on the doubles map.

India signs deal to acquire R-27 Air-to-Air Missiles from which country?
