George Fernandes passes away

Veteran Socialist leader and former Union Defence Minister George Fernandes passes away after Prolonged illness, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior cabinet ministers and political leaders mourn the passing away of the veteran leader, Bihar Govt. announces 2 Day State Mourning. Former Defence Minister in Vajpayee government, George Fernandes passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.
Born in Karnataka's Mangalore on 3rd June 1930, George Fernandes was a veteran socialist leader and trade unionist. He rose to prominence in 1967 with a surprise victory over senior Congress leader SK Patil from South Bombay constituency. He organised many strikes and bandhs in Bombay in the 1950s and 1960s, the most notable among these was the All India Railway strike in 1974. Fernandes went underground in 1975, while challenging Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for imposing emergency. However, he was arrested later on.
In 1977, after the Emergency had been lifted, Fernandes won the Muzaffarpur seat in Bihar in absentia. He was appointed Union Minister for Industries in Morarji Desai's cabinet when the Janata Party took office in 1977. George Fernandes was among those leaders of anti-Congress politics, who led from front.

ICAR Republic Day Tableau Kisan Gandhi bags First Prize

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was awarded First Prize for its Tableau, ‘Kisan Gandhi’ in the Republic Day Parade - 2019. Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Defence, handed over the award to the ICAR team here today. The ICAR tableau displayed the importance of dairy farming, use of indigenous breeds and livestock based organic agriculture for rural prosperity.
The ICAR tableau “Kisan Gandhi” portrayed the Gandhiji’s vision to improve agriculture and livestock for the prosperity of rural communities. To gain more insight, he attended a training program on dairy farming for fifteen days in 1927 at Bangalore Centre of the ICAR - National Dairy Research Institute. He also visited and appreciated the 'Indore method' of composting at the Institute of Plant Industry, Indore in 1935.
The Gandhian philosophy included promotion of Swadeshi breeds, organic agriculture and goat milk for better health. In order to realize Gandhi's dream, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research is relentlessly working towards transforming the Indian Agriculture for ensuring livelihood security and higher income of our Annadata, the farmers. By developing and deploying  cutting edge science and technology, India has succeeded in achieving food self-sufficiency and remains the highest milk and cotton producer in the world.
In the tableau, Bapu was shown with goats and a cow. Organic agriculture, revolution in cotton and milk production and food safety analysis for better health were also showcased. Kasturba Gandhi was also shown engaged with Charkha and caring for animals at Bapu Kuti at Wardha Ashram. It symbolized livestock based sustainable and climate resilient agriculture. The 22 tableaux rolling down the Rajpath during the 70th Republic Day Parade included 16 tableaux from states and Union Territories, six from various central ministries and departments.

Ashok Chakra Award 2019 to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, a militant-turned-soldier who laid down his life fighting a group of terrorists in Shopian in Kashmir in November, was awarded the Ashoka Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind 26th january 2019. The award -- India’s highest peacetime gallantry honour -- was received by Wani’s wife and mother at the Republic Day celebrations at Rajpath. Pranab Mukherjee, India's 13th President and one of the Congress' tallest leaders for decades, has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour. Along with Mr Mukherjee, social activist and one of the BJP's senior-most leaders Nanji Deshmukh and music maestro from Assam, Bhupen Hazarika, have been awarded posthumously.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said Nanaji Deshmukh's stellar contribution towards rural development showed the way for a new paradigm of empowering those living in the villages. In a series of tweets, Mr. Modi said, Nanaji Deshmukh personifies humility, compassion and service to the downtrodden and he is a Bharat Ratna in the truest sense.  The Prime Minister said the songs and music of Bhupen Hazarika are admired by people across generations and from them radiates the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood. He popularised India's musical traditions globally.  Mr. Modi said,  former President Pranab  Mukherjee is an outstanding statesman of our times and he has served the nation selflessly and tirelessly for decades, leaving a strong imprint on the nation's growth trajectory.  The Prime Minister said Mr. Mukherjee's wisdom and intellect have few parallels.

103rd Constitutional Amendment Act - 10% Quota for General Category

103rd Constitutional Amendment Act: President Ram Nath Kovind on 12th January 2019 gave his assent to the Constitution amendment that provides 10% reservation to the economically backward section in the general category in government jobs and education.

  • With the Ministry for Law and Justice issuing a notification about the Constitution (103 Amendment) Act, 2019 receiving the Presidential assent, reservation for the economically weaker among general category is now law.
  • The Act amends Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution — ensuring Fundamental Rights to a citizen — by adding a clause that allows the State to make “special provision for the advancement of any economically weaker sections of citizens”.

These provisions would relate to “their admission to educational institutions, including private educational institutions, whether aided or unaided by the State, other than the minority educational institutions”.
