Vijai Sharma is New Central Information Commission (CIC)

Vijai Sharma was on 8 June 2015 appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission (CIC), New Delhi. He will have tenure of 5 years or till he attain the age of 65, whichever is earlier. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as an Information Commissioner in Central Information Commission since 2012.  Vijai Sharma is a 1974 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre. He has rich work experience in Administration & Governance and Law & Policy in Central and State Governments and in the United Nations. Vijai Sharma’s name for post of Chief Information Commissioner was finalized on 1 June 2015 by Selection Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His appointment was further approved by President Pranab Mukherjee.

At a ceremony held at 1230 hrs at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shri K.V. Chowdary was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner and Shri Vijai Sharma was sworn in as Chief Information Commissioner. They made and subscribed the oath of their respective offices before the President.

KV Chowdary is New Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC)

Former Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, K.V. Chowdary, was on Monday, appointed as the new Central Vigilance Commissioner, while the senior-most Information Commissioner, Vijai Sharma, is the new Chief Information Commissioner. T.M. Bhasin, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Bank, has been appointed Vigilance Commissioner. The government and the opposition had on June 1, agreed on the names of the CIC and CVC, the posts that have been lying vacant for over nine months.  In April, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party vice president Rahul Gandhi had attacked the Prime Minister over the delay in the appointments of chiefs of CIC, CVC and Lokpal saying the government feared transparency. Many RTI activists had also questioned the delay in the appointments.

 Meanwhile, Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, had written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 20 to publicly disclose the names of persons shortlisted for appointment as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). Senior Supreme Court advocate Ram Jethmalani too raised objections to making Mr. Chowdhry as the CVC. A selection panel headed by the Prime Minister, which includes leader of the principal opposition party, and senior cabinet ministers selects the CVC, CIC, vigilance commissioners and information commissioners. The Central Vigilance Commission is headed by a CVC and comprises two vigilance commissioners and today’s appointment constitutes the full Commission. French Open 2015 Men's Winner - Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka spectacularly shattered Novak Djokovic's dream of a career Grand Slam on Sunday when he became the oldest winner of the French Open in 25 years. The 30-year-old Swiss claimed a famous 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure his second career major after the 2014 Australian Open. It ended world number one Djokovic's bid to become only the eighth man to secure a career Slam as he slumped to his third defeat in a Roland Garros final in four years.
Wawrinka became the oldest champion in Paris since Andres Gomez in 1990 after just his fourth win in 21 meetings against the Serb. Sunday's shock defeat, meanwhile, was only Djokovic's third in 44 outings in 2015 and ended his 28-match win streak.

Serena Williams won her 20th Grand Slam title and third French Open crown at Roland Garros on Saturday, clawing her way back from a break down in the last set to defeat Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-2. PM plants "Kadamb" sapling on World Environment Day

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today planted a Kadamb sapling (Neolamarckia Cadamba), at the Race Course Road lawns, to mark the occasion of World Environment Day. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister exhorted each family to plant trees in the coming monsoon season, and to take pride in the number of trees planted by the family, just the same way as they take pride in worldly possessions. The Prime Minister said that living in harmony with nature is the only way to avoid a catastrophic situation on Mother Earth.
The Prime Minister also placed a traditional earthen-pot (matka) along with the sapling, which is a traditional way of conserving water, and ensuring that the sapling has regular water supply. Planting the Kadamb sapling, the Prime Minister recalled the poem of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, on the subject:
यह कदंब का पेड़ अगर माँ होता यमुना तीरे।
मैं भी उस पर बैठ कन्हैया बनता धीरे-धीरे।।
