India launches PSLV C23 with 5 foreign satellites

PSLV-C23 Successfully Launches French Earth Observation Satellite- SPOT 7 and four other co-passenger satellites from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota on June 30, 2014 . PSLV C23 with 5 foreign satellites today. PSLV C23 carrying French Earth Observation Satellite SPOT-7 and four co-passenger spacecrafts from Singapore, Canada and Germany was successfully launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, witnessed the historic moment. After a perfect lift off from the First Launch Pad in Satish Dhawan Space Centre here at 9.52 AM witnessed by Modi, Indian Space Research Organisation's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C23 placed all five satellites into their intended orbits, one after the other between 17 and 19 minutes after liftoff, in textbook precision. Though the Mission Readiness Review Committee and Launch Authorisation Board had on Friday cleared the launch, the launch time was rescheduled to 9.52 AM Monday, a delay of three minutes, attributed to "probable space debris" coming in the rocket's way. Besides its primary payload of 714 kg French Earth Observation Satellite SPOT-7, PSLV C23 carried and placed in orbit 14 kg AISAT of Germany, NLS7.1 (CAN-X4) and NLS7.2 (CAN-X5) of Canada each weighing 15 kg and the 7 kg VELOX-1 of Singapore.

Ramanujan Hardy Number 1729

Ramanujan Hardy Number 1729: 1729 is the natural number following 1728 and preceding 1730. 1729 is known as the Hardy–Ramanujan number after a famous anecdote of the British mathematician G. H. Hardy regarding a visit to the hospital to see the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. In Hardy's words:
I remember once going to see him when he was ill at Putney. I had ridden in taxi cab number 1729 and remarked that the number seemed to me rather a dull one, and that I hoped it was not an unfavorable omen. "No," he replied, "it is a very interesting number; it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways."     ”
The two different ways are these:

 1729=1^3+12^3=9^3+10^3.

About Ramanujan: Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920) was an Indian mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, which was centred in Europe at the time, Ramanujan developed his own mathematical research in isolation. As a result, he rediscovered known theorems in addition to producing new work. Ramanujan was said to be a natural genius by the English mathematician G. H. Hardy, in the same league as mathematicians such as Euler and Gauss.

Great Himalayan National Park in UNESCO Heritage site list, Now Total 32 Sites from India

Great Himalayan National Park inscribed as a World Heritage Site. Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area, a rich biodiversity in Himachal Pradesh and home to several rare and threatened species of flora and fauna, was on Monday approved for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The decision comes only a day after 'Rani-ki-Vav', an 11th century stepwell in Gujarat earned the coveted status. Located in Kullu district, some 250 km from Shimla, the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) embodies the ancient method of environmental conservation in the Kullu Valley. Spread over 905.40-sq km, the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area (GHNPCA) includes the upper mountain glacial and snow melt water source origins of the westerly flowing JiwaNal, Sainj and Tirthan Rivers and the north- westerly flowing Parvati River, the Culture Ministry said.
Great Himalayan National Park: Great Himalayan National Park (GHNPCA) is located in the western part of the Himalayan Mountains in the northern Indian State of Himachal Pradesh and is characterized by high alpine peaks, alpine meadows and riverine forests. The 90,540 ha property includes the upper mountain glacial and snow melt water source origins of several rivers, and the catchments of water supplies that are vital to millions of downstream users. The GHNPCA protects the monsoon-affected forests and alpine meadows of the Himalayan front ranges. It is part of the Himalaya biodiversity hotspot and includes 25 forest types along with a rich assemblage of fauna species, several of which are threatened. This gives the site outstanding significance for biodiversity conservation.

Gujarat's Rani ki Vav on UNESCO World Heritage site

Rani ki Vav (queen's stepwell), in Gujarat's Patan town, has been added to Unesco's list of World Heritage sites, an official statement said Sunday. "Rani ki Vav has been approved for inscription on the World Heritage list," said a statement of the ministry of culture, adding that the decision was taken by Unesco at the World Heritage Committee session currently on at Doha, Qatar.    It was nominated by ASI for the World Heritage List of UNESCO in Feb. 2013. The process of nomination of Rani ki Vav and the management strategy presented for the property and Buffer Zone as per Operational Guidelines of UNESCO can be credited to excellent teamwork between the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Government of Gujarat. The dossier was prepared by an in-house team of experts within the ASI and vetted by the Ministry of Culture through its Advisory Committee at various stages. The State Government of Gujarat supported the protection of Buffer Zone as a protected area in the Development Plan. They worked with ASI officials to mark the around the Rani ki Vav including the excavated area of the historic Sahastralinga Talao under ASI as well as the unexcavated areas of this Talao which falls under agricultural fields for future protection in the Development Plan. The initiative of additionally protecting surrounding area around Rani ki Vav with its inclusion in the Local Development Plan is an exemplary example of integrating heritage with planning and needs to be emulated for heritage sites across India. The inscription of Rani ki Vav on the World Heritage List as the single most example of a step well is a testimony to the traditional water systems of India. The local residents of Patan who were engaged actively in the process and provided full support to ASI and State Government in the process including its field evaluation by ICOMOS (the Advisory Body to UNESCO) deserve a special mention in achieving this target to place this stepwell on India’s World Heritage List.
Rani-ki-Vav is situated about 2 km to the northwest of Patan district of Gujarat State. Rani-ki-Vav, a stepwell built in the 11th century is the most developed, elaborate and ornate example of a unique type of Indian subterranean architectural structure, and it marks the zenith in the evolution of stepwells in India. It is a particularly large and complex example of a stepwell, with seven storeys of ornamented panels of sculptures and relief representing the height of the Maru-Gurjara style. Following the flooding and disappearance of the Saraswati River due to geotectonic changes, the property was buried under layers of silt for almost seven centuries and has been preserved underneath in an exceptional state of conservation by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Kailash Temple, Ellora Cave Temple Complex

Kailasa temple is a famous rock cut monument, one of the 34 monasteries and temples known collectively as the Ellora Caves, extending over more than 2 km, that were dug side by side in the wall of a high basalt cliff in the complex located at Ellora, Maharashtra, India. It is a megalith carved out of one single black granite rock. It is estimated that about 400,000 tons of rocks was scooped out over years to construct this monolithic structure. It was built in the 8th century by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I .
The Kailash Temple is notable for its vertical excavation—carvers started at the top of the original rock, and excavated downward, exhuming the temple out of the existing rock. The traditional methods were rigidly followed by the master architect which could not have been achieved by excavating from the front.

Rafael Nadal wins record 9th French Open title

Rafael Nadal wins record 9th French Open title. Rafael Nadal maintained his phenomenal stranglehold on the French Open by defeating Novak Djokovic to win a ninth title at Roland Garros. In the modern era, no man has had a tighter grip on a Grand Slam event than Rafael Nadal, whose 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Djokovic allowed him to win his ninth French Open by the age of just 28.
His tally of 14 majors equals the mark of Pete Sampras and puts him just three behind the all-time record of Roger Federer who is almost five years older. Defeat was cruel for world number two Djokovic, the 2012 runner-up, who still needs a French Open title to become just the eighth man to complete the career Grand Slam. The 3hr 31min duel ended on a sour note when Djokovic double-faulted on match point, shaken by a shout from the crowd.

Maharashtra CM launches Metro Rail service in Mumbai

Mumbai’s metro rail "Mumbai Metro One" starts on 8th June 2014 after delay of more than 3 year with thousands crowding the station to witness beginning of metro rail in Mumbai city. After a long wait, the first Metro service in the bustling metropolis was rolled out on Sunday with the CM Prithviraj Chavan flagging off the service even as over 1,00,000 passengers enjoyed the train ride within six hours of its operations. "Mumbai Metro passes one lakh ridership within six hours of its first day operations," a Mumbai Metro One Pvt Limited (MMOPL) spokesperson said on Sunday. During this period, it operated 14 services. Earlier in the day, the services on the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar section, connecting western suburbs with eastern suburbs, were launched by Chavan along with ADAG Chairman Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani at 10.10 AM. State Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and local MPs Kirit Somaiya, Poonam Mahajan and Gajanan Kirtikar were also present at the launch.
The new mode of transport is expected to provide much-needed relief to the commuters in the bustling metropolis where the overburdened suburban railways ferries 70 lakh people every day. The company said it will operate 200-250 services a day, carrying around 11 lakh passengers. Every coach can carry 375 passengers, while the entire train can transport 1,500 commuters. The introduction of Metro services will revolutionise the commuting of Mumbaikars, Chavan said after the launch, which came after a delay of three-and-a-half years from the scheduled time. "This project was conceptualised in 2006. It had faced several challenges during execution mainly because it is an elevated corridor. It definitely has taken time, but finally we have launched the services. This project is important for a populated city like Mumbai," he said. The government has been insisting that all safety measures should be met and that there is no compromise on safety of passengers, Chavan said.
