MP, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Haryana reach ODF milestone

Five more States viz., Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Haryana have reached the milestone of making all cities and towns ‘Open Defecation Free(ODF)’ as the Swacch Bharat Mission completed three years today. This was announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Hardeep Singh Puri while speaking at a programme here today on the occasion of the third anniversary of the mission.  Giving an account of the progress towards Swacchata in urban areas of the country, Shri Puri informed that as against the target of building about 66 lakh individual household toilets in urban areas, 38 lakh toilets have already been built and construction of another 14 lakh toilets is in progress. Over two lakh community and public toilet seats have been built as against the mission target of five lakh toilet seats. 

Stating that focus in now being laid on Solid Waste Management, Shri Puri said that efforts are on to generate over 500 MW of electricity and over 50 lakh tons of compost from municipal solid waste to enable processing of the entire solid waste being generated in urban areas.  Shri Puri said that sanitation is a birth right and individual responsibility as well. He informed that the fortnight long ‘Swacchata Hi Sewa’ campaign concluding today has witnessed participation of over 80 lakh people spread over 3.50 lakh activities in urban areas.  The Minister stressed on the need for ‘life style change’ to realise the objective of Swacch Bharat as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

MS Dhoni nominated for Padma Bhushan

BCCI has nominated MS Dhoni for the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian award for his contribution to the game. A senior BCCI official "Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been nominated by the BCCI for the Padma Bhushan award. It was a unanimous decision by the members. He has been one of the greatest names in contemporary cricket and the most appropriate choice of the Indian cricket board," BCCI acting president CK Khanna told PTI. Dhoni's credentials are impeccable and as the only Indian captain with two World titles (2011 50-over World Cup and 2007 World T20), the BCCI did not have to ponder over likely names.

Dhoni could become the 11th cricketer to receive the award, after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Chandu Borde, Lala Amarnath, Prof DB Deodhar, Col CK Nayudu, Raja Bhalindra Singh and Maharajah of Vizianagram (Vizzy).

Rajiv Gauba takes over as Union Home Secretary

Rajiv Gauba, IAS (Jharkhand cadre-1982 batch) on 31st August 2017 took over as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Shri Gauba joined the Ministry of Home Affairs as Officer on Special Duty on June 27, 2017 and took charge as the Union Home Secretary upon the superannuation of Shri Rajiv Mehrishi. Prior to this, Shri Gauba was Secretary in the Ministry of Urban Development. He has wide-ranging experience in senior positions in the Central and State Governments and in international organisations. Hailing from Punjab, the 1959 born Shri Gauba is a Physics graduate.

He has worked as Chief Secretary, Jharkhand. Earlier, Shri Gauba served in the Central Government in the Ministries of Home, Defence, Environment and Forests and Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Shri Gauba also served in the International Monetary Fund representing the country for four years on the Board of IMF.

Jharkhand becomes first state to launch Direct Benefit Transfer in Kerosene

Jharkhand has become the first state in the country to implement Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in Kerosene in four identified districts namely, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Khunti and Jantara from 1st October, 2016. Under the DBTK Scheme, PDS kerosene is being sold at non-subsidised price, and, subsidy, as admissible, is being transferred to consumers directly into their bank accounts. This initiative of the governments is aimed at rationalising subsidy, based on the approach to cut subsidy leakages.

Earlier, Shri Gauba served in the central government in the Ministries of Home, Defence, Finance, Environment and Forests and Department of Electronics and Information Technology in senior positions.  Shri Gauba also served in the International Monetary Fund representing the Country for four years on the Board of IMF.  He was Collector and District Magistrate for 7 years in the districts of Gaya, Nalanda and Muzaffarpur.

Sapha Har Movement

Sapha Har Movement, Jharkhand: Sapha Har Movement begins in 1868 led by Santhals. It was initiated by Bhagrit Manjhi. Sapha Har Movement is also known as Kherwar Movement. This movement had popularized the concept of One God as well as aimed at social reform. He demanded that a Santal raj should be introduced. Bhagirath proclaimed himself as the King of Santhals and the representative of God. He wanted the Santhal Tribes to stop their sacrifices to the "evil bongas". He was arrested in that same year. Bhagrit Manjhi was arrested in 1868 as an instigator of disturbances. Bhagirath Kherwar's movement spread like a wild fire among the Santhals of Santhal Parganas. The Government had to take strong measures to crush it. He was active till 1871 and continued his activities during the great famine in Bengal in 1874. He was also sentenced to two years imprisonment.  This movement too was suppressed but not before its suppression convinced the people, that their upliftment lay in purifying themselves and regenerating themselves as Sapha Hor or pure man. This movement was ended by the British East India Company.

11 killed, several injured in stampede in Jharkhand

In Jharkhand, at least eleven people have been killed and over a dozen injured in a stampede at a temple in Deoghar town. According to the district administration, the stampede occurred at 5 am when people were trying to jump queue in order to get closer to the temple. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief at the death of 11 persons in the Deogarh stampede. He announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those killed in the stampede while injured would be given Rs 50,000. 

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has condoled the loss of lives due to a stampede in Jharkhand. "Pained at loss of lives due to the stampede in Jharkhand. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief. I pray that the injured recover quickly. I spoke to Chief Minister Raghubar Das ji on the incident.," the Prime Minister said.

PM lays foundation stone of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) Hazaribagh, Jharkhand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) at Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. Later, in the presence of PM Modi, an MoU to set up a new steel plant will be signed among Ministry of Steel, National Mineral Development Corporation and State Mineral Development Corporation of Government of Jharkhand. A Special Purpose Vehicle will be set up under this agreement. After this agreement, Jharkhand will be a pioneer in steel production of about 300 million tonnes by 2025. In the presence of PM Modi, an MoU to set up a new steel plant was also signed among Ministry of Steel, (Government of India), National mineral development corporation and State Mineral Development Corporation of Government of Jharkhand. A Special Purpose Vehicle will be set up under this agreement. After this agreement, a state like Jharkhand will be a pioneer in steel production of about 300 million tonnes by 2025.

Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), Jharkhand will soon have thousand acre campus to give fillip to agriculture in the region. Foundation stone of the campus of Institute will be laid by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 28th June, 2015 at Goriya Karma village in Barhi, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. Union Agriculture Minister, Shri Radha Mohan Singh will also grace the occasion. IARI-Jharkhand would achieve inclusive agricultural growth through Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in the region. It will achieved through multi-disciplinary research centered around 3 major schools viz. School of Natural Resource Management, School of Crop Improvement & Protection, and School of Horticulture and Forestry with integrated Animal Sciences, Basic Sciences and Social Sciences components for catering to the local farming system needs of the region. • Development of region-specific integrated farming systems

• Higher agricultural education for human resource development beginning with 10 post graduate students from 2015-16 in Soil Science, Water Science &Technology, Agronomy, Horticulture and Genetics disciplines.
• Collaboration within NAREES and international organizations for making effective use of cutting edge technologies to boost regional capacities and economy of the farmers
• Ensuring an overall social impact in terms of employment generation through best skilled scientific, technical, administrative and supporting manpower

Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor Route Map

Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor Route Map, Cities:  In order to give a boost to industrial development in the densely populated states of Northern India, the Prime Minister has approved the commencement of preparatory work on creating an Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor. The Amritsar - Kolkata Industrial Corridor is patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). The DMIC uses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone and is one of the most significant developments taking place in the sphere of industrialization. The DMIC has financial support from the Japanese Government and is expected to attract large investments leading to rapid industrial growth in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra through the development of new cities, industrial zones, and world-class infrastructure.

In a similar manner, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will use the Eastern dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone. The Eastern DFC extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata. Therefore, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will be structured around the Eastern DFC and also the Highway system that exists on this route. It will also leverage the Inland Waterway System being developed along National Waterway - 1 which extends from Allahabad to Haldia.

The Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor  will cover the states of  Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40% of India's population.  This is a region which needs a major push for industrialization and job-creation and the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will act as a catalyst for this growth.
