Saina Nehwal, K Srikanth win Indian Open Super Series

Saina Nehwal has lifted the Singles crown of the India Open Super Series Badminton tournament while Kidambi Srikanth won the men's singles title at the India Open Super Series on Sunday. In the final at the Siri Fort Indoor Complex in New Delhi on Sunday, she defeated Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in straight games 21-16, 21-14. The girl from Hyderabad, who has been on a roll ever since her victory at the China Open, played like a champion as she anticipated her opponent's moves and caught her on the wrong foot during rallies. Intanon, seeded third, seemed to be affected by her marathon semifinal match against Carolina Marin of Spain which lasted for close to an hour and and half on Saturday. The energy-sapping clash seemed to have made her movements slow on the court as she struggled with her returns. Harvir Singh Nehwal, Saina's father was very happy at his daughter's achievement.
Kidambi Srikanth brought more joy to the Indian camp after Saina Nehwal's victory when he won the men's singles title at the India Open Super Series. He beat Denmark's Viktor Axelsen 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 to win his maiden India Open Super Series title.

World leaders bid farewell to Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew

Global leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Premier Tony Abbott, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, former US President Bill Clinton and UK House of Commons leader William Hague attended the ceremony of Lee Kuan Yew. Defence sirens were blown throughout Singapore's housing estates for a minute of silence to pay respects as the last post was played on by a military bugler. The Singapore Armed Forces, which was established by Lee, gave the highest honour to the leader with a 21-gun salute, a fly-past by the air force planes and sail-past by naval boats. A 21-gun salute is normally reserved for sitting heads of state but an exception was made for Lee.
PM offers his condolences over passing of Lee Prime Minister Narendra Modi today lauded Singapore's founder and first premier Lee Kuan Yew as a "global thinker" and said India deeply valued his friendship and his support for its economic progress. In his message in the condolence book, at the funeral of the Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister said The passing of Lee Kuan Yew, is not the passing of an individual, but indeed, of an era. He was a torchbearer of hope, not just for Singapore, but for all of Asia. He will continue to inspire eternally. On behalf of all Indians, I pay homage to him.

Delhi Govt ban guktha, chewable tobacco

Delhi govt will put a ban on sale, purchase and even storage of all forms of chewable tobacco including "guktha, khaini and zarda" in the national capital from Monday. "We have decided to come up with a notification to ban chewable tobacco in all forms from Monday in Delhi. Under this, no one will be allowed to sell, purchase or store chewable tobacco," Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said. He said enforcement teams of Delhi Police as well as the Health Department have been asked to conduct surprise inspections across the city to ensure that the ban is implemented. "The teams have been told to be active on this," Jain said. However, no such ban will be enforced on cigarettes.
Health Department officials said that there was a Delhi government notification in September 2012 which was in pursuance of series of directions from the Supreme Court to ban gutkha in the city. But since the ban mentioned the term "gutkha", the tobacco retailers started selling the components of gutkha (betel nut and raw tobacco) in separate pouches. So, the purpose of banning gutkha was not served.

WPI-based Inflation at record low of -2.06% in February 2015

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation for February 2015 provisionally stood at -2.06 per cent, compared with -0.39 in January and 5.03 per cent in February last year, mainly on account of cheaper food, fuel and manufacturing products, raising industry clamour for further cuts in interest rate.  Food prices rose 7.74 per cent, according to official data released here on Monday. Inflation in prices of onions, pulses and protein-rich food items such as egg, meat and fish rose and declined in prices of vegetables, fruits and milk during February.
The rate of price rice cooled significantly for fuel and power inflation in February with wholesale inflation at -14.72 per cent against -11 per cent in January. The fall was also widespread across primary (1.4 per cent against 3.3 per cent in January) and manufactured products (0.3 per cent against 1 per cent in January). The Government also revised the December wholesale price inflation rate to -0.5 per cent from 0.1 per cent reported earlier. The wholesale price index reflects production data. Last week, separate data on consumer price inflation showed that the rate of retail prices rise accelerated to 5.37 per cent in February from 5.19 per cent in January on the back of higher food and fuel prices.

India's Export drop by 15% in February 2015

In a sharp decline, India's exports contracted last month by over 15 percent to USD 21.54 billion, while imports also fell by as much leaving a lower trade deficit of USD 6.84 billion. With imports slowing down, mainly on account of lower crude oil prices, the trade deficit declined to USD 6.84 billion. The deficit, which reflects higher imports than exports, was USD 8.32 billion in January.
The merchandise exports were USD 25.35 billion in February 2014, according to the Commerce Ministry data released on Friday. Cumulative value of exports during April-February 2014-15 was USD 286.58 billion, as against USD 284.07 billion, up 0.88 percent, over the same period last year. Imports during February were valued at USD 28.39 billion, while it was USD 33.66 billion in the year-ago month, down 15.65 percent. "The trade deficit for April-February, 2014-15 was estimated at USD 125.22 billion which was higher than the deficit of USD 124.84 billion during April-February, 2013-14," the ministry said.

Mekong-Ganga Cooperation

Mekong–Ganga Cooperation (MGC) was established on November 10, 2000 at Vientiane at the First MGC Ministerial Meeting. It comprises six member countries, namely India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. They emphasised four areas of cooperation, which are tourism, culture, education, and transportation linkage in order to be solid foundation for future trade and investment cooperation in the region.
The organization takes its name from the Ganga and the Mekong, two large rivers in the region. The project was announced by the Foreign Ministers of the six MGC at the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Bangkok in 2000.   India has excellent relations with all the countries in the MGC; Thailand, with a pro-U.S. policy, is possibly the only odd one out. However, since the Vajpayee government enjoys good relations with the U.S., there should be little problem in India cooperating with Thailand.
