President inaugurates International Gita Mahotsava 2017

President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the International Gita Mahotsava-2017 today (November 25, 2017) in Kurukshetra, Haryana.  Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the message of the Gita is relevant for all times to come. From an ancient society based on agriculture to a society based on commerce and industry, and now to a knowledge society – the message of the Gita has been everlasting. The Gita guides us in resolving the dilemmas and struggles between right and wrong that exist within every human being. “What is right and what is wrong?”, “What should we do and not do?” Answers to these questions emerge from the Gita.

The President also noted the efforts made by the people of Haryana to improve the child sex ratio in the state. He commended the Government of Haryana’s efforts in this regard. He pointed out that daughters of Haryana had excelled in a variety of fields, from politics to education, mountaineering to wrestling, and space travel to, to cite a recent example, beauty pageants. He stressed the need to encourage this process of women’s empowerment in the state. Earlier in the day, the President visited Brahma Sarovar and laid the foundation stone of the Gita Research Centre at the Gita Gyan Sansthanam in Kurukshetra.

MP, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Haryana reach ODF milestone

Five more States viz., Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Haryana have reached the milestone of making all cities and towns ‘Open Defecation Free(ODF)’ as the Swacch Bharat Mission completed three years today. This was announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Hardeep Singh Puri while speaking at a programme here today on the occasion of the third anniversary of the mission.  Giving an account of the progress towards Swacchata in urban areas of the country, Shri Puri informed that as against the target of building about 66 lakh individual household toilets in urban areas, 38 lakh toilets have already been built and construction of another 14 lakh toilets is in progress. Over two lakh community and public toilet seats have been built as against the mission target of five lakh toilet seats. 

Stating that focus in now being laid on Solid Waste Management, Shri Puri said that efforts are on to generate over 500 MW of electricity and over 50 lakh tons of compost from municipal solid waste to enable processing of the entire solid waste being generated in urban areas.  Shri Puri said that sanitation is a birth right and individual responsibility as well. He informed that the fortnight long ‘Swacchata Hi Sewa’ campaign concluding today has witnessed participation of over 80 lakh people spread over 3.50 lakh activities in urban areas.  The Minister stressed on the need for ‘life style change’ to realise the objective of Swacch Bharat as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief convicted in rape case

A CBI court in Panchkula on 25th August found Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty in a rape case. He is facing up to seven years in jail. A former follower had accused Singh of repeatedly raping her inside the Dera campus near Sirsa in Haryana. 

The alleged incident took place in 1999. An FIR was registered in 2002. The Dera chief and the management of the sect have denied the allegations all throughout. Haryana and Punjab, especially, Chandigarh, are on high alert to deal with any situation on the law and order front. Several companies of the paramilitary forces have reached the twin States, with tight security arrangements being put in place. The army has taken him into protective custody and he will be transferred to a military base.

Sakshi Malik wins India’s first Olympic Bronze in Rio 2016

Woman wrestler Sakshi Malik wins India's first Rio Olympic Bronze Medal by clinching the bronze in the 58kg category, pulling off a sensational 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova in the Play-off bout. The 23-year-old from Rohtak became only the fourth woman athlete from India to win an Olympic medal as she earned the dramatic win after falling behind 0-5 in the do-or-die bout on day 12. Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London) and shuttler Saina Nehwal(2012, London) were the only other women players from India to have won a medal in Olympics.  Like in three of the four other bouts earlier in the day, Sakshi won the crucial bout after coming from behind. 

She, in fact, had lost 2-9 in the quarter-finals to Russia's Valeriia Koblova in the fifth bout of the day before getting a second chance in repechage when her conqueror reached the final.  Sakshi's victory brought cheers to the Indian contingent that had endured agonising 11 days without a medal.  Sakshi turned the tables on the Kyrgyzstan wrestler in the dying seconds of the bout as Tynybekova was in complete command in most part of the clash.  Tynybekova grabbed Sakshi's leg and quickly earned two points before adding one more for the Indian's passivity.  In the bronze play-off too Sakshi's winning move that got her two points initially was challenged by her Kyrgyztan rival and it was reviewed and she was awarded an extra point by the judges much to her rival's chagrin.  With just 10 seconds remaining, Sakshi desperately needed one more point to post a win and she held her nerves as she took down the Swedish girl in those dying moments to post a narrow victory.

Two-wheeler Taxi service launched in Gurgaon

First-of-its-kind on-demand two-wheeler taxi service is launched in Gurgaon city of Haryana. The on-demand two-wheeler taxi service in Gurgaon was launched by M-taxi, a two-wheeler taxi service provider, which had acquired permit for the service from the Haryana government to start its operations.

Gurgaon became the first city in India which has a legalised taxi system. Bike taxis are better equipped to deal with congestion, traffic, and last mile connectivity, which are the three major problems that Indian cities are struggling to cope with. This type of service already exists in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and China M-Taxi’s pricing starts at Rs. 25 for the first three kilometres, and Rs. 5 for every subsequent kilometre. Another two-wheeler taxi service, Baxi, has also got permission from the Haryana government to start its operations.

Delhi to Katra-Vaishano Devi expressway via Amritsar

Katra in Jammu and Kashmir will soon be connected to Delhi via Amritsar through an Expressway which will not only make the road journey much more comfortable but also considerably reduce the travel time between these important towns. He made this announcement while addressing a huge public congregation in Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, today. Dr. Jitendra Singh said that work on the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will begin very soon and this will be the India’s longest Expressway passing through Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir covering a distance of 600 kms and costing more than Rs.15,000 crores. One of the major benefits from it would be that travel time from Katra to Delhi which presently takes around 11 to 12 hours will come down by at least 5 to 6 hours, he said. Once this Expressway becomes functional, he said, it will give Katra the distinction of being among those few destinations in India which will get connected through the highest class of roadways in the country. He thanked Union Road Transport & Highways Minister, Shri Nitin Gadkari for his support to this project.

PM inaugurates Badarpur-Faridabad Metro Line

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Delhi-Faridabad Metro Line that would allow hassle free travel for around two lakh daily commuters between the national capital and the industrial hub in Haryana. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Faridabad on Saturday, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar thanked the Prime Minister for gifting the Metro service which would take the city to another level of progress with better connectivity with other NCR towns. The Prime Minister regretted that it had become a fashion to politicize every decision taken by the Union. He said the whole world had recently faced economic difficulties, but India's economy had stood firm. He added that all State Governments and the Union Government had to move forward shoulder to shoulder. He reiterated his Government's resolve for Housing for All by 2022. The Prime Minister travelled from Central Delhi to Faridabad, and back, by metro. In the course of the journey, he interacted with several people, especially youth, who were also travelling on board the metro train.

India ranks 12th in Nuclear power generation

India ranks at 12th position in terms of power generation from nuclear source as per data published in May 2015, by Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). However, it stood at 6th position in terms of number of reactors in operation country- wise, globally.  The current installed nuclear power capacity is 5780 MW, which is expected to increase to 10080 MW on progressive completion of projects under commissioning/ construction by 2019. The Government has accorded financial sanction and administrative approval for Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) Units – 1&2 (2X700 MW) and Kudankulam Units- 3&4 (2X1000 MW) with a total capacity of 3400 MW. These projects are being prepared for launch in the current year.
In addition, one Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor of 500 MW capacity at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu is at advanced stage of commissioning. Construction of two more Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR 1&2) of 600 MW capacity each at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu is also planned. More nuclear power projects based both on indigenous technologies and with international cooperation are planned in future. India has signed Nuclear agreements with USA, France, Russia, Namibia, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, Argentine Republic, United Kingdom, Republic of Kazakhstan, Canada, Sri Lanka and Australia. India is open to negotiation with other friendly countries who seem to have potential to make contribution to India’s nuclear energy programme.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme: Government has announced Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. This is being implemented through a national campaign and focussed multi sectoral action in 100 selected districts low in CSR, covering all States and UTs. This is a joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The trend of decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR), defined as number of girls per 1000 of boys between 0-6 years of age, has been unabated since 1961. The decline from 945 in 1991 to 927 in 2001 and further to 918 in 2011 is alarming.

Prime Minister Modi launched the programme on January 22, 2015 from Panipat, Haryana.

The objectives of this initiative are:

- Prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination

- Ensuring survival & protection of the girl child

- Ensuring education and participation of the girl child

Cartoonist Pran kumar Sharma dies

Cartoonists Pran Kumar Sharma, Cartoonist Pran, Creator of Chacha Chaudhary, sabu and other character died on Wednesday. Pran was the man behind the famous comic series Chacha Chaudhury. His others famous characters included cartoons like Sabu, Shrimatiji, Pinki, Billoo, Raman, Channie Chachi and many more. Pran succumbed to cancer early on Wednesday morning at a hospital in Gurgaon, according to his publisher Diamond Comics. He was 75. "Pran passed away at 9 AM at the Medanta hospital. He had been suffering from cancer of the intestine for the past eight months. He is survived by a son and a daughter," Gulshan Rai, Publisher, Diamond Comics, said. Born in Kasur, near Lahore in Pakistan in 1938, Pran began his career in 1960 as a cartoonist for the Delhi-based newspaper Milap with comic strip Daabu In 1969, Pran sketched Chacha Chaudhary for the Hindi magazine Lotpot, which made him famous. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his grief over the passing away of the cartoonist. Comic book character Chacha Chaudhary's creator Pran Kumar Sharma was a "versatile cartoonist who brought smiles on the faces of people", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday, expressing grief at his demise. "PM described Pran Kumar Sharma as a versatile cartoonist who brought smiles on the faces of people through his rich work," the official Twitter handle of the PMO said.

Mahendragarh, Bhiwani, Bharatpur included in NCR

Bhiwani and Mahendragarh districts of Haryana and Bharatpur in Rajasthan will now be a part of the National Capital Region (NCR). This proposal was approved at the meeting of NCR Planning Board on Monday. This move will lead to major infrastructural development in these areas. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath. "Based on the request of the participating states, the board has approved the inclusion of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, Bhiwani and Mahendragarh in Haryana in NCR. The proposal for including Karnal and Jind districts of Haryana in NCR are also being considered,'' Nath said. Funding from the NCR Planning Board will be available for projects in areas included in NCR. "Loans can be made available at cheaper rates to such areas. This will eventually lead to an increase in real estate prices,'' said a Ministry official. Until now, the NCR included nine districts of Haryana, five districts of UP, Alwar in Rajasthan and the National Capital Territory (NCT).

Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor Route Map, Cities:  In order to give a boost to industrial development in the densely populated states of Northern India, the Prime Minister has approved the commencement of preparatory work on creating an Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor. The Amritsar - Kolkata Industrial Corridor is patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). The DMIC uses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone and is one of the most significant developments taking place in the sphere of industrialization. The DMIC has financial support from the Japanese Government and is expected to attract large investments leading to rapid industrial growth in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra through the development of new cities, industrial zones, and world-class infrastructure.

In a similar manner, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will use the Eastern dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone. The Eastern DFC extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata. Therefore, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will be structured around the Eastern DFC and also the Highway system that exists on this route. It will also leverage the Inland Waterway System being developed along National Waterway - 1 which extends from Allahabad to Haldia.

The Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor  will cover the states of  Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40% of India's population.  This is a region which needs a major push for industrialization and job-creation and the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will act as a catalyst for this growth. The corridor will cover the cities of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Saharanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Hazaribagh,  Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur and Kolkata.
