LPU Jalandhar will host Indian Science Congress (ISC-2019)

106th Indian Science Congress (ISC-2019) will be held at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar, Punjab from 3rd to 7th January 2019. The theme of the 5-day science congress is ‘Future India: Science & Technology’. Approx 15,000 delegates, including 300 top scientists and Nobel Laureates from across world are expected to attend the congress. The science congress will have 18 plenary sessions, including those of medical, chemical, environmental and other science domains. There will also be four parallel mega events, including the children’s science conference; women’s science conference; science communicators’ meet; and, science exhibition. The exhibition will see participation from the national and international science companies, especially from the US, Australia, Germany and Switzerland.

Marshal of IAF Arjan Singh passes away

Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh passed away in New Delhi on 16th September 2017, following a cardiac attack. He was admitted to the hospital in the morning on Saturday. He was 98. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, a state funeral will be accorded and national flag will fly half-mast on the day of the funeral in Delhi on all buildings where it is flown regularly. He was the only officer of the Indian Air Force who was promoted to five-star rank as Marshal. He served as Chief of the Air Staff from 1964 to 1969 and led the force in 1965 war. He also served as Ambassador to Switzerland, Vatican and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh was born on 15 April 1919, in Lyalpur, He was Chief of Air Staff when the IAF saw action in its first combat of the modern age in 1965. He was hardly 44 years years of age when entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Indian Air Force. In recognition of his services, the Government of India conferred the rank of the Marshal of the Air Force onto Arjan Singh in January 2002 making him the first and the only 'Five Star' rank officer with the Indian Air Force. Arjan Singh's, testing time came in September 1965, when the subcontinent was plunged into war. He remained a flyer to the end of his tenure in the IAF, visiting forward squadrons & units and flying with them.

Kerosene Free Chandigarh from April 1, 2016

From 1st April, 2016, Chandigarh will be declared kerosene free, with the efforts of the city Administration and Oil Marketing Companies. Thus, no further distribution of subsidized kerosene will be done in Chandigarh from the month of April, 2016 onwards.  The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India with the help of Chandigarh Administration has been working for the last few months to make Chandigarh ‘a Kerosene Free City’. MoPNG decided to facilitate the households presently using Kerosene Oil by facilitating switchover to LPG.  During this campaign, a total of 15,249 LPG connections were provided in Chandigarh city, including 1574 for BPL households.

Delhi to Katra-Vaishano Devi expressway via Amritsar

Katra in Jammu and Kashmir will soon be connected to Delhi via Amritsar through an Expressway which will not only make the road journey much more comfortable but also considerably reduce the travel time between these important towns. He made this announcement while addressing a huge public congregation in Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, today. Dr. Jitendra Singh said that work on the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will begin very soon and this will be the India’s longest Expressway passing through Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir covering a distance of 600 kms and costing more than Rs.15,000 crores. One of the major benefits from it would be that travel time from Katra to Delhi which presently takes around 11 to 12 hours will come down by at least 5 to 6 hours, he said. Once this Expressway becomes functional, he said, it will give Katra the distinction of being among those few destinations in India which will get connected through the highest class of roadways in the country. Hero Cycles founder O P Munjal passes away

Om Prakash Munjal, Co-Chairman of Hero Cycles Ltd and a leading industrialist passed away here today. He was 87. Munjal breathed his last in the DMC Hero Heart Centre, his family said. He is survived by a son and four daughters. Munjal's cremation will take place tomorrow in the Model Town Extension Cremation ground in Ludhiana. From a modest beginning of bicycle spare parts business in Amritsar in 1944 with his brothers to being one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in the world, O.P. Munjal, known as the father of cycle industry in the country, scripted a successful business story.
The Hero Cycles factory was set up in 1956 in Ludhiana with a capacity for producing 25 cycles a day. It now produces nearly 19,000 cycles daily. Listed in the 'Guinness Books of World Records' in 1986 as the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world in 1986, Hero Cycles commands nearly 48 percent of market share in the country's cycle market.

6 New IIM at Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha) and Amritsar (Punjab)

Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today gave its approval for setting up of six new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in the country. These new IIMs will be located at Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha) and Amritsar (Punjab). These IIMs will begin functioning from assigned temporary campuses and shift to their permanent sites after construction of their campuses. It is intended that these six new IIMs will commence their first academic session from 2015-16. Each Institute will start with an intake of 140 students in the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) courses. It is expected that the annual intake will increase to reach a level of 560 students each year by the end of seven years.
The PGP in Management would be the flagship programme of these institutions. Admission to the PGP will be through the open and competitive Common Admission Test (CAT) being conducted by the IIMs. The Institutes would train young graduates to undertake management responsibilities and carry out research and consultancy in the field of management and allied areas. Their programmes will provide the country, potential leaders in diverse fields of endeavour and enterprise.

Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor Route Map, Cities:  In order to give a boost to industrial development in the densely populated states of Northern India, the Prime Minister has approved the commencement of preparatory work on creating an Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor. The Amritsar - Kolkata Industrial Corridor is patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). The DMIC uses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone and is one of the most significant developments taking place in the sphere of industrialization. The DMIC has financial support from the Japanese Government and is expected to attract large investments leading to rapid industrial growth in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra through the development of new cities, industrial zones, and world-class infrastructure.

In a similar manner, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will use the Eastern dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone. The Eastern DFC extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata. Therefore, the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will be structured around the Eastern DFC and also the Highway system that exists on this route. It will also leverage the Inland Waterway System being developed along National Waterway - 1 which extends from Allahabad to Haldia.

The Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor  will cover the states of  Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40% of India's population.  This is a region which needs a major push for industrialization and job-creation and the Amritsar - Delhi - Kolkata Industrial Corridor will act as a catalyst for this growth. The corridor will cover the cities of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Saharanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Hazaribagh,  Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur and Kolkata.
