Pahlaj Nihalani appointed new censor board chief

Filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani was appointed as the new censor board chairman along with nine other members.
The government also reconstituted the board appointing nine others as members including Vani Tripathi Tikoo and filmmakers Ashoke Pandit and Chandra Prakash Dwivedi. An official statement on Monday said that Nihalani was appointed as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in an honorary capacity for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Other eminent persons who have been named as members are film writer Mihir Bhuta, Syed Abdul Bari, Ramesh Patange, actor George Baker, actor-filmmaker Jeevitha and actor- playwright S Ve Shekhar.
Nihalani has produced films like "Aankhen", "Talaash: The Hunt Begins..." and "Shola Aur Shabnam". After Samson resigned last week, all members of the CBFC had also put in their papers. The government had strongly rebutted the charges levelled by Samson with I&B minister Arun Jaitley asserting that it maintains an arm's length distance from the film certification process.

cartoonist RK Laxman passes away

Eminent cartoonist RK Laxman passed away on January 26, 2015. Following his ill health Laxman was put back on ventilator support on Sunday morning. A legendary cartoonist, who created the `The Common Man` was admitted in a private hospital earlier this month following multiple-organ failure. Whereas, his condition was better until today morning when he was admitted again to a hospital in Pune. His demise has left a major void. PM Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay his condolences

SC sets aside stay on Salman Khan's conviction

Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside Rajasthan High Court order keeping in suspension conviction of actor Salman Khan in Black Buck case. The Apex Court has asked the High Court to consider afresh Salman's plea on the issue of staying the conviction. In another development from the apex court, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted three months extension to murder accused.
Italian Marine Massimiliano Latorre to stay in his country on medical grounds. Latorre, one of the two Italian marines facing murder charges in the fishermen killing case had, on January 7, moved the apex court seeking extension of his stay in Italy on the ground that he had undergone a heart surgery on January 5. The case against marines pertains to the killing of two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast on February 15, 2012.

DRDO Chief Avinash Chander sacked 15 months ahead of his contract term

Government on Tuesday abruptly removed the chief of India's top defence research organization, Avinash Chander, 15 months before his contract was to end.  His removal by a cabinet committee on appointments headed by PM Narendra Modi came 15 months before his contract was to terminate. His removal is reportedly without explanation to him. Media reports quoting PMO said there was no ulterior motives behind the removal.

Arvind Panagariya named Niti Aayog vice-chairman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed noted economist Arvind Pangadiya, as the Vice Chairman of the newly constituted NITI (National Institution for Transforming India Aayog) AAYOG. With Prime Minister as its head, the panel has replaced the Planning Commission. Economist Bibek Debroy and Former Secretary Defence R&D V.K. Saraswat have been named as the full time members of the Aayog. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Suresh Prabhu and Radha Mohan Singh have been named Ex-officio members. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Thawar Chand Gehlot and Smriti Irani are the special invitees. NITI AAYOG will have all the chief ministers as its members.

-  President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to promulgate an ordinance that amends the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The ordinance will make significant changes in the Land Acquisition Act including removal of consent clause for acquiring land for five areas of industrial corridors, PPP projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence.
- President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill. The Bill was passed by Parliament in August last year and 15 States have ratified it. The bill has provision to set up a National Judicial Appointments Commission to replace the present Collegium system of appointments of judges in higher judiciary which has been under severe criticism.
