Dr K. Sivan appointed new ISRO Chairman

Noted space scientist Dr K. Sivan was appointed the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation on 10th January 2018. He was also appointed secretary, department of space, and chairman of the Space Commission for three years. Sivan will replace current ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar.

An alumnus of the Madras Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Sivan designed SITAR, a software that ISRO uses to simulate the trajectories of the rockets and track them in real-time. He is being appointed at a time when ISRO plans to outsource building of satellites and launch vehicles to a consortium of Indian industries. Also the Space Agency is all set to begin the new calender year with the launch of 31 satellites on January 12 in its PSLV C-40.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi inuagurates 'Indira Canteen', aimed at serving the poor at subsidised rates in Bengaluru on 16th August. Udupi Ramachandra Rao passes away

Eminent space scientist and former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Udupi Ramachandra Rao passed away in Bengaluru on 24th July 2017 due to age related ailments. He was 85. Rao is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. 

Born in Adamaru area of Karnataka’s Udupi district, Rao was involved in all ISRO missions till date in one capacity or the other.  He is credited on account of contributions to the development of space technology in India and its extensive application to communications and remote sensing of natural resources. Rao served as the chairman of ISRO for 10 years from 1984 to 1994. Rao was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2017 for his contribution to Indian space technology.

Karnataka Lokayukta resigns

Karnataka Lokayukta Dr Justice Y Bhaskar Rao on Tuesday resigned from his post, his resignation letter was sent to the Governor which has been accepted. A motion to remove Dr. Rao was adopted by the Legislative Assembly recently and the Speaker was yet to hand over the probe into the case to the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Dr. Rao was on leave from 27th July and is holed up in Hyderabad after his son Y. Ashwin was arrested for running an extortion ring in the Lokayukta, threatening officers with raids if they failed to pay up.

Bengalore to host 3-day Northeast festival

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that after having successfully showcased Northeast in the union capital of New Delhi and other important towns in North India, the next step would be to carry forward the Northeast showcasing campaign to South India, beginning with the hosting of a 3-day Northeast Festival at Bengaluru from 6th of November this year. He disclosed this here today after a meeting with representatives of “Northeast India Welfare Society” who presented him a detailed Programme book describing the highlights and diverse facets of the three-day event.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that during the last nine months since he took over the Ministry, he has tried to follow a two-pronged strategy. One is that of bringing rest of India closer to Northeast for which initiatives like “DoNER at Doorstep” were started to hold monthly Camp Secretariat of DoNER Ministry in each of the eight States of the region by rotation. The second part of the strategy envisages carrying Northeast to different parts of this vast country and the Bengaluru event will be a step in this direction. On the one hand, while the rest of India needs to be familiarized and acquainted better with rich attributes of Northeast and its people, on the other hand the people of Northeast also need to be exposed to the diversities that enrich India from North to South and from East to West, he added.

QS World University Rankings of 2015-16 were published today, with MIT maintaining its position as the top-ranked university worldwide, with Harvard University climbing two places to rank second, followed by the University of Cambridge and Stanford University in joint third. Veteran journalist M V Kamath passes away

Veteran journalist M V Kamath died at his native place Manipal in Karnataka on Thursday after a brief illness. He was 93 and was admitted to hospital for the past few days. Kamath, former chairman of Prasar Bharti and recipient of Padma Bhushan, was born in Udupi on 7th September 1921.

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has condoled the demise of renowned journalist, Shri Madhav Vittal Kamath. "A prolific writer and a fine human being, Shri MV Kamath`s demise is a loss to the world of literature and journalism. May his soul rest in peace. My mind goes back to the several interactions I had with MV Kamath ji. He was a repository of knowledge, always full of humility and grace," the Prime Minister said.

Ltd., Erode, Tamil Nadu (Large Scale Manufacturing Industry); Tata Business Support Services Limited, Hyderabad (Large Scale Service Industry) and Elin Appliances Pvt. Ltd., Solan, Himachal Pradesh (Small Scale Manufacturing Industry); In addition to these awards, nine organizations have been selected for commendation certificates under various categories.

The award winners and recipients of commendation certificates were selected from a total of 63 applicants from various sectors following vigorous evaluation by a group of qualified and trained professionals from different spheres of intellectual activity. Awards would be presented by Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in a ceremony scheduled to be held later on.
