J&K CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passes away

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away on Thursday morning after prolonged illness. He was on ventilator support at AIIMS in New Delhi. The 79-year-old leader who founded the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party had been admitted to the AIIMS with complaints of severe fever and neck pain.
President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. In a condolence message to his daughter, Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, the President has said, “I am sad to learn about the passing away of your father, Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Shri Sayeed was a colleague of long years. He distinguished himself through remarkable political acumen and vision. Throughout his life, Shri Sayeed worked for the socio-political transformation and betterment of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. In his passing away, we have lost an outstanding public figure who was always in touch with the grassroots of society. Shri Sayeed’s contribution to Jammu and Kashmir and India through long years of public service will be always remembered. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and convey them to all other members of your family. May God give you and your family the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss”.
The patron of Jammu and Kashmir's People's Democratic Party took oath as the Chief Minister on 1st March last year with the BJP as a partner in the coalition government. According to the alliance terms decided between the PDP and BJP, Sayeed was to remain the Chief Minister for the full six-year term of the state assembly. The Chief Minister recently hinted Mehbooba could take over the reins of the state. The transition will make Mehbooba, 56, the first woman Chief Minister of the state.
