Cyclonic Storm, VARDAH over southeast Bay of Bengal

The cyclonic storm, VARDAH over southeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 06 hrs, slightly intensified further and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 9th December, 2016 over southeast Bay of Bengal near Latitude 12.1ºN and Longitude 90.4ºE, about 990 km southeast of Visakhapatnam, 1090 km east-southeast of Machilipatnam and 250 km west-northwest of Port Blair. The system is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It is very likely to move initially northwestwards, then west-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Kakinada around afternoon/evening of 12th December 2016. However, there is possibility of slight weakening of the system before landfall.

Donald Trump Named Person of the Year by Time Magazine

Time magazine announces Donald Trump as its person of the year on 7th December, describing him on its front cover as the ‘president of the divided states of America’. Assistant managing editor at Time, Ben Goldberger, says that for 90 years the magazine has named the person ‘who’s had the greatest effect on the world and the news for good or for ill’.
The Time cover reads, “Donald Trump - President of the Divided States of America” and the cover image features a photograph of the President-elect sitting in his private residence at Trump Tower. Gibbs said Time gives the title to the person who has had the greatest influence on events “for better or worse”. The No.3 finalist for the Person of the Year was “The Hackers,” which Gibbs said referred to “a new cyber security threat we saw this year of state-sponsored hackers looking to delegitimise an American election”. This isn't the first time TIME has chosen a polarising figure for its world-famous annual profile. Stalin, Hitler and Khomeini were previous choices.

Jagdish Singh Khehar appointed new Chief Justice of India

Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar has been appointed as the 44th Chief Justice of India. He will be sworn-in as the CJI on January 4, 2017. The current Chief Justice TS Thakur will hold on to the office till 3rd January, 2017. Justice Khehar will be the first Sikh to hold the post of CJI and would remain in office from January 4, 2017 till August 4, 2017 i.e. till he attains the age of 65. The name of Justice Khehar was recommended for appointment by the current CJI. Justice Khehar will be the first Sikh to hold the post of CJI. The advisory, after Thakur’s retirement, would consist of Justice Khehar, Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Madan B. Lokur. 
Born on 28 August, 1952, Khehar enrolled as an advocate in 1979 and practiced mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Shimla, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh high courts. Later he was appointed as a judge of Supreme Court of India in 2011. Justice Khehar holds a LLM degree from Panjab University, and became an advocate in 1979. He became the Additional Advocate General in Punjab, in January 1992, and later Senior Standing Counsel, Union Territory, Chandigarh. In February, 1995 he became a senior advocate and remained standing counsel for Universities, Corporate Bodies and a large number of companies and cooperative organisations.

ISRO launches RESOURCESAT-2A

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully sent the Resourcesat-2A into the orbit this morning from Sri Harikota. The satellite will serve nation for next five years. The satellite blasted off from the satish Dhawan Space center on 7th December 2016. The three cameras of different resolution on ‘Resourcesat-2A’ will give regular micro and macro information on land and water bodies below, farm lands and crop extent, forests, mineral deposits, coastal information, rural and urban spreads besides helping in disaster management. Resourcesat-2A is the third remote sensing satellite under ‘Resourcesat’ series. Resourcesat-1 was put in space in October 2003 and Resourcesat-2 in April 2011, each with a planned life of five years. The satellite was earlier planned for launch on November 28. The spacecraft mass is around 1,200 kilogram with a power generation capacity of 1,250 Watt and a mission life of five years.
