Which Sea is without a Coastline ?

Sea without a Coastline is one of frequently asked question in various exams. The Sea without coastline is Sargasso Sea. The Sargasso Sea is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between the West Indies and the Azores, covering some 2 million square miles (3 million sq km). It is bounded on the west by the Gulf Stream; on the north, by the North Atlantic Current; on the east, by the Canary Current; and on the south, by the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. This system of ocean currents forms the North Atlantic Gyre. All the currents deposit the marine plants and refuse they carry into this sea. The Sargasso Sea is 1,100 km wide and 3,200 km long. Bermuda is near the western fringes of the sea. The water is exceptionally blue, with a high salt content.
The Sargasso Sea is also known as “the floating desert”. Although about one-third of the Atlantic’s plankton is produced here, the Sargassum lacks the nutrients to attract commercially valuable fish. But many small marine animals, including tiny crabs, shrimp and octopuses, live on and among the sargassum, the rootless weed.
Q. Which one of the following seas is without a coastline ?
A. Tasmania sea
B. White sea
C. Sargasso Sea
D. Sea of Okhotak
Ans: C

Weather satellite INSAT-3D launched from French Guiana

India's advanced meteorological satellite INSAT-3D was successfully launched by an European rocket from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana early on Friday, giving a boost to weather forecasting and disaster warning services. European space consortium Arianespace's Ariane 5 rocket launched INSAT-3D and Alphasat satellites.
According to ISRO, INSAT-3D adds a new dimension to weather monitoring through its atmospheric sounding system, which provides vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and integrated ozone from surface to top of the atmosphere.
The imaging system of INSAT-3D has significant improvements over that of KALPANA and INSAT-3A, the space agency said. INSAT-3D will provide continuity to earlier missions and further augment the capability to provide various meteorological as well as search and rescue services. INSAT-3D had a lift-off mass of 2060 kg. INSAT-3D also carried the newly developed 19 channel sounder, the first such payload to be flown on an ISRO satellite mission. The Data Relay Transponder (DRT) will be used to receive meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic data from remote, uninhabited locations over the coverage area from Data Collection Platforms (DCPs) like Automatic Weather Station, Automatic Rain Gauge and Agro Met Stations.

10% Law for transfer of Energy from one Trophic level to Next

Ten Percent (10%) Law: Ten percent law for transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next was introduced by Lindeman (1942). According to this law, during the transfer of energy from organic food from one trophic level to the next, only about ten percent of the of energy from organic matter is stored as flesh. The remaining is lost during transfer, broken down in respiration, or lost to incomplete digestion by higher trophic levels. The ten percent law suggests or implies that exactly 90% of the energy is lost in the transfer at each trophic level, and that only 10% is passed on as useable biological energy. That implied preciseness is misleading, however, and is one of the reasons that many scientists discount the concept, even label it a myth. Instead, it should be considered a rule of thumb, a teaching device, or perhaps best, a mnemonic device that serves as a reminder of the striking inefficiencies of natural systems.
So if there are 40,000 kg of producers, how many kg of primary consumers are there? 40,000 kg/ 10 = 4,000 kg. How many kg of secondary consumers? 400 kg How many kg of tertiary consumers? 40 kg
